It’s a brilliant day to be an American … on the heels of its decision to uphold the Affordable Health Care Act, our Supreme Court has voted to legalize gay marriage in all fifty states. I got unexpectedly emotional when I read the news this morning.
This is, as I said to a friend, a vital decision. It is about much more than weddings and titles — it is about basic human rights. It’s about spouses being able to make crucial medical decisions on one another’s behalf in the event of an emergency. It is about paid medical leave in the event of sickness, shared health insurance benefits, the ability to legally co-parent and make all pertinent decisions, the rights of widows or widowers, and so, so much more.
There will come a day when it will seem absurd that gay marriage was once an issue. Oh wait … that day is here.
